How To Rent a Car in Japan

Going back to car rental, the most basic requirements are:
- You must be 18 years old or older
- Not all international drivers’ licenses are accepted as valid in Japan. If you are not from a country with a special arrangement, you will have to apply for a local license. The main basis for international drivers’ licenses to be accepted in Japan are those that have been issued under the terms of the 1949 Geneva Convention with a few exceptions like Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Italy.
If you are planning to rent a car for city driving, it’s advisable to just stick to public transportation. Buses, trains and taxis are very reliable and always on time. You can plan appointments around the public transportation system and never be late once.
However, travel outside of the major cities will need a car rental. To rent a car, all you need to do is approach any one of the many car rental companies. You can even go straight to your favorite car company like Nissan or Toyota and request for a rental. The fees are a little high and you will be required to pay and submit documents to be approved for the rental. If you are from the US or Canada, you will even recognize some of the name of the car rental companies like Avis, Dollar, and Budget. Credit card payments are accepted and the usual rules in car care are observed.
